This deep gorge is home to three huge waterfalls flanked by lush foliage. The Thousand Islands region of New York is a stunning place to visit in fall. Large and small islands dot the St. Lawrence River, which is also the border between the U.
This hilltop preserve overlooks the Thousand Islands, as well as Boldt Castle , a regal mansion on the river. The view is nothing short of picturesque! In the northern reaches, Whiteface Mountain is a stunning place to see the changing leaves. You can also ride the Cloudsplitter Gondola to the top which is a one-of-a-kind way to view the fall color. Further north, foliage will be just-past-peak in Lake George , with muted seasonal colors.
Foliage will be past peak in the Lake Pleasant area of Hamilton County. Look for complete leaf change, and yellow and orange leaves of average brilliance. In Herkimer County, the Old Forge area will be past peak with nearly complete leaf change and significant droppage. Look for predominate gold and orange leaves of average brilliance, along with shades of yellow, and some reds and light greens mixed in. This weekend in the Catskills , look for a mix of foliage conditions in Greene County , with average-to-bright yellow, orange, and red leaves.
Riverside areas will be near-peak, while valley areas will be at peak, and mountain towns will be past-peak. Sullivan County spotters reporting from Callicoon along the Delaware River predict peak foliage, with yellow, red, and orange leaves of average brilliance, despite significant leaf droppage. A mix of peak and past-peak conditions are expected in the West Shokan area of Ulster County, showcasing nearly complete leaf change with average to bright shades of red and yellow, along with some purple leaves.
Wind and rain have taken a toll on the leaves at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center in Highmount, which will see past-peak conditions and nearly complete leaf change, with orange-yellow leaves of average brilliance. In Central New York , Norwich spotters in Chenango County are predicting peak foliage this weekend with near-total leaf change, and mostly yellow and orange leaves of average brilliance, along with some brown and touches of red. Significant leaf droppage has been noted.
Otsego County volunteers in Cooperstown expect just-past-peak foliage, as wind and rain have knocked down many leaves over the past week. Visitors can expect average shades of yellow and brown, along with a few reds and some remaining green. Other reporting stations in the region are now past-peak. In Broome County, leaves will be past-peak in Binghamton , which has experienced significant leaf droppage.
Northern Chautauqua County along Lake Erie is a little behind and not as close to peak as the southern portion in the Chautauqua Lake area. Cattaraugus County foliage will be past-peak this weekend. In the Greater Niagara region, peak foliage will arrive in parts of Erie County this weekend. Foliage progression in the county depends on location, with the northern portion projected to be at peak or just-past-peak, the western portion at peak, the southern portion near-peak, and a just-past-peak to the east.
Colors continue to be more vivid in areas east, south, and west of Lake Ontario. In the Hudson Valley , peak foliage will arrive in Columbia County this weekend, according to spotters in Hudson. Throughout Orange County, foliage will be at midpoint of change. Midpoint to near-peak foliage is expected in Westchester County, according to volunteers in White Plains.
Some areas are just beginning to change, while other patches are near or at peak. Look for yellow, gold, orange, red, purple, rust, and green leaves of average brilliance. Trees surrounding ponds and lakes are expected to be near or at peak by the weekend.
Bethpage State Park is still mostly green with some change expected by the weekend, although there is already some color on the trees around the golf course parking lots.
